A Poem--not mine

I've been reading poetry this afternoon, and found one by a man named Ed that captures some of my recent thoughts beautifully:

Prayer for Prayer
by Ed Zahniser

Solitude so perfect it's not lonely:
grant us, merciful God/dess, this sense
just once of satisfying prayer
--each of us Your one and only
supplicant. We'll bat across the back fence
dark things difficult to share.

We'll need new words. Nothing off-the-shelf
can quite express our urgent need
simply to confess, unburden, and unbind.
Most prayers turn out like talking to oneself
even with the spirit up to speed
and quiet mollifying the mind.

Accept our words and thoughts as psalms
--or merely our most pitiful candle lamp
that quavers toward the author of desire.
Admit their doubt. And more, admit my qualms.
I feel like a monkey creeping into camp
to worry embers from your fire.
