When I received the e-mail accepting me to the University of Pittsburgh, the subject line said, "Welcome to Pitt!" My initial reaction was, "Oh no--they actually call it that: They call it 'Pitt.' It's probably the armpit of the Midwest. Do I really want to go to a school named 'Pitt'?" Despite my first reaction to the nickname, the word "Pitt" has now grown into normal usage in my vocab, and I think nothing of other uses of the word. In fact, pieces of the school--like the Cathedral of Learning, where my classes are held--remind me of Hogwarts.
The photos in this link are of the city of Pittsburgh--Pitt--and demonstrate that it's not a "pit" after all...
